Dates

This hackathon is open for submissions from March 1, 2024, to March 23, 2024. We are only accepting submissions that are made during the open time period.

Eligibility

  • Contestants must be between the ages of 13-18 and must identify as female or nonbinary.
  • Participants can work in teams of 1- 4 but all teammates must work on the project.
  • Anyone participating in the Hackathon must register on Devpost and through our registration Google Form.

Project and Submission Requirements

  • The Hackathon will begin March 1, 2024, and all projects must be submitted by March 23, 2024, at 11:45 PM EST. PROJECTS CANNOT BE STARTED BEFORE THE HACKATHON BEGINS!
  • You cannot submit pre-existing projects, must be created within the hackathon timeline.
  • Students should create an app or web-based application that promotes women and non-binary people entering fields in STEM. The application should be functional and not just an idea.
  •  
  • A 2-4 minute demo video of the application in action. We suggest uploading this to YouTube and submitting the link. Your demo should include a demo of your working submission via a step-by-step visual demo. You should explain the experience of the user during the video as well.
  • A 100+ word description of how the project encourages women and nonbinary people to enter into a STEM field.
  • All work must be original, any evidence of plagiarism will result in immediate disqualification.

Prizes

  • Certificates of completion will be given to all participants of the hackathon
  • Prizes will be awarded to anyone placing in the top 10
    • Some prizes will be given to all ten projects while others may be given to only the top 1, 2, 3, etc.
    • There will also be a special prize package for the Popular Vote winner
  • Prizes will be awarded on March 31, 2024 no later than 11:59pm EST.

Judging Criteria and Winner Selection

  • Hackathon Fit - Did your project answer the prompt correctly? Were all submission requirements uploaded?
  • Creativity: Did your project uniquely address the project? Is it innovative and a new, uncommon idea?
  • Impact - How big of a reach would your project have? Would it make a big impact on someone’s life? Would it reach a large audience?
  • Practicality - How realistic is your project? Could it be implemented in the real-world?
  • Polish - How well put together is your project? Did it take a lot of effort and time to create? Does it seem professional?
  • Technicality - Is your project technically complex? Does it showcase a variety of skills across various languages or the languages taught in WiS workshops? Does it show skill growth?
